1992 Alfa Romeo 164L

  • Only 59,000 miles!

  • Dark metallic green / tan leather

  • Five-speed

  • Excellent condition

  • Over $7000 in mechanical work invested in the last two years

  • First $6300 buys it; near offers considered

Many believe that Alfa Romeo invented the Sport Sedan back in the sixties. They were four-door five-passenger cars that were responsive and fun to drive, but with room for the whole family. In the USA, the 164 was the latest of a series of great Alfa Sport Sedans that carry on the tradition.

This car is a beautiful dark metallic green with a tan leather interior. It has less than 60K miles on the clock! It has a 3-liter 183HP V6 engine, a 5-speed transmission, and front wheel drive. The FWD, coupled with galvanized body panels, make the 164 an Alfa you can truly drive year-round. The car has a top speed of over 140MPH, although I've never driven it in triple digits. It has ABS brakes and a driver's airbag.

In 1992, the L model had the same mechanicals as the base model, but with many refinements (the L stands for Lusso - Luxury). These include full leather interior, power heated seats front and rear(!), alloy wheels, climate control, power sun roof, keyless RF remote, factory alarm system, etc. etc. It has a good factory stereo cassette radio and power antenna.

I purchased the car two years ago. The original owner was a woman from Weston, MA, who owned it for its first nine years and traded it in on a Mercedes. Fortunately, a guy in our Alfa club works at the Mercedes dealership, spotted it, and bought it. A few months later, I convinced him to part with it, knowing that it was in excellent cosmetic condition but requiring some mechanical work.

And that's what it received! Within the past two years / 12,000 miles, this car has:

  • Completely rebuilt transmission with all new bearings and seals

  • New clutch kit and machined flywheel

  • New A/C compressor and drier, belts, hoses, etc. The car has been converted to R-134. The A/C runs nice and cold.

  • New timing belt and tensioner at 47K miles

  • The entire suspension has been rebuilt with Performatek polyurethane bushings!

  • New ball joints and tie rod ends

  • New rear control arms

  • New rear struts

  • New front shock bearings

  • New Stebro rear exhaust section (gives it a subtle but deep and pleasing exhaust note)

  • New oil pressure, washer fluid, and coolant level sensors

  • New distributor cap, rotor, spark plugs

  • New O2 sensor

  • New coolant reservoir

As you can see, there isn't much that hasn't been done to this baby, and mechanically she's in excellent shape! Tires are Michelin Pilot XG4s (great tires), about 12,000 miles old. We have the original dealer invoice, manuals, tools, and all service records from new. The car gets 23-24 MPG.

And she's no slouch cosmetically either! In addition to the intrinsic beauty of her green/tan color scheme, everything is in very good to excellent condition inside and out. The car has never been in an accident. The original paint is in very good condition, with no fading and a few scattered minor scuffs and scratches. There is corrosion to the driver's side outside rear view mirror (it should be sanded, primed, and sprayed black), and the only sign of rust is some minor bubbling just behind the passenger side rear wheel (see photos above).

The interior leather is in excellent condition, including the driver's seat. The carpets are excellent, and there are matching floor mats front and rear. The dashboard and rear deck are perfect.

164s are reputed to have a weak spot in the climate control: there are stepper motors whose gears have been known to strip, and repair by a mechanic costs a few hundred dollars. Ours have not been repaired, nor do they show any symptoms of needing it (clicking from the stripped gears).

This is a marvelous car — quiet and luxurious like a BMW 5-series, yet you get all those wonderful sounds and sensations from the famous Alfa engine when you put your foot down. It's far more unique and stylish than a BMW. We have invested over $7000 in mechanical work within the last two years! But because of market conditions, we can only ask for something close to $6300. We're selling it because we're going to start doing a lot of traveling all around the country, and my wife would feel more comfortable with a car that has an extensive dealer network in case of a problem. I guess I do too, although I know I won't find anything that comes close to the pleasure of owning and driving this 164 at many times the price.

I'm sure I've left out some of the info that you're interested in, so please feel free to contact me by email at dave@dvpratt.com or by phone at 781-320-8208.
