Day 3 - September 25, 1998
The Loneliest
Highway
Third day out and we're really
movin' - almost 400 miles behind us today! In addition to the travel highlights of
the day, we're going to begin a new feature - CULTURE. Check out below for the day's
cultural/educational/artistic event.
We spent most of today
traversing Nevada on America's Loneliest Highway, US Rt 50. Rt 50 goes straight
across the country from San Francisco to Washington, DC. The Nevada stretch was
recommended to us by several people as a tremendous drive. They were all right!
The Loneliest Highway is truly one great route! Mountains, desert, farms - it
has it all!
This is where we went today
Best Western,
Bridgeport, CA
Lovely downtown Bridgeport. Note the early-morning frozen dew covering the
GTV - probably its first in many years. It started right up, though, and we were soon on
our way . . .
Best Western,
Bridgeport, CA
. . . after breakfast and a little adjustment to the idle speed. All else
seemed fine and . . . off we went.
On the way to Carson
City, NV
Wonderful scenery all about with bright blue skies! Would you believe we had
to dodge an ostrich in the road shortly after this shot? Come on, it was only 9:00am
and there really WAS an ostrich!
The Loneliest Road,
Nevada - US Rt 50
Known in all the guidebooks as the Loneliest Road in America, we found out why for
ourselves. It crosses all of Nevada and is a lovely, albeit lonely, drive.
Here are some salt flats at a low point (elevation-wise) along the way.
The Loneliest Road,
Nevada - US Rt 50
Lonely? How about bored!! Here we are piking along Rt 50 at 3 digits
(check out the speedo). The car really hums (among a lot of other sounds) at 100mph!
Nevada ain't as wide as they said it was!
The Loneliest Road,
Nevada - US Rt 50
Comin' round the mountain there was this terrific rainbow and we couldn't resist
the shot. It's real, not a PhotoShop addition! Yes, there was some rain, and
yes, Dave's foot got wet again - we'll look into sealing the windshield when we get back.
Beer(s) of the Day
|
Ruby Mountain Pale Ale
Ruby Mountain Brewing Company, Clover Valley, NV
What can we say? The first one was good.
The second one was good. Now we're going out to dinner. Bye. |
New Feature!!! -
Culture
Today, in the first issue of the Culture
feature, we visited a historic - but still working - copper mine. This mine is
located five miles west of Ely (pronounces E-Lee, as in Robert), Nevada. We didn't
really learn a lot about copper mining, but we did take a picture:
